Giving Back to the Community: Messenger Helps Revive a Lichfield Landmark

Published: 13th January 2025

The Messenger Staffordshire team have helped preserve a little bit of Lichfield’s history by repairing and reinstating a bust of one of the city’s most famous past residents.

From 1810 a bust of influential writer Samuel Johnson had hung above a bookselling business in Lichfield but was removed in1969. Upon speaking with the local council and the Samuel Johnson society, Messenger realised the importance of the figure and what it would mean for it to return to its original location.

The bust needed significant restoration repairs, so our team in Burntwood lent their specialist skills and their time to bring the figure back to life. They then assisted in its challenging reinstallation above the shop which is now owned by The George Hotel.

The finished bust was unveiled by Lichfield’s Mayor, Town Crier and local councillors, all of whom were thrilled to have this celebration of Samuel Johnson back in its rightful place.
