The final phase of work on the State Dining Room at Stowe House culminates 23 years of activity by the Stowe House Preservation Trust to restore the house to a similar appearance of that around the year 1800.
Messenger was awarded the latest phase of works to the State Dining Room, costing around £1.2m. The works included restoring the entirety of the floor and repairing the ceiling that had been damaged by water ingress, causing loss of its ornate decoration.
The tapestries that now hang on the walls are replacement, wallpaper copies of the original artwork, which were traced to a property in Switzerland.
The room has gone from plain, magnolia coloured walls and woodwork to a richly decorated representation of the 18th century dining room. All materials have been used to replicate the originals, including £95,000 worth of gold leaf!
