Handel House is a Grade I Listed building located on Brook Street in Mayfair, London. Handel lived and composed music in this Georgian house for 36 years. Jimi Hendrix later resided in the property in the late 20th century.
The Hallelujah project includes the conversion of the lower ground and ground floor areas to the front of the site into museum use. They were, until recently, a shop. The vision behind is to create Handel’s home.
On the lower ground floor, Handel’s kitchen has been recreated to the front of the site along with toilets and cupboards for visitor’s coats and a commercial kitchen at the rear.
On the ground floor, Handel’s front and rear parlours have been recreated along with a shop to the rear. Fireplaces have been recreated and structural alterations with new steelwork have been introduced. There has been works to the services throughout the building including to upper floors, which include new lighting and small power, new heating systems and altering the mechanical ventilation. Repairs to the Georgian stairs and some further minor reconfiguring of the building was also required on upper floors, much of this was to the rear where the upper flights of a modern staircase were removed. Within the building, there is stone and timber floors and new panelling in the Georgian style. There is also lath and plaster ceilings and walls, and traditional paints.
